Update on shipping & option to change to the Ultrawide
While we've shipped many Crystal Super 50 PPD QLED's, we know that many of you are still waiting for your order to ship out. We're doing everything we can to deliver the perfect headset to users as soon as possible. We also want to offer users the option to change to the Ultrawide, offering a wider FOV while maintaining the same clarity (more below).

Production and shipping timing

We are slightly behind the original shipping schedule, for several reasons:
  • Improved measures for our quality control, including a second test for each headset
  • Operational improvements to the factory
  • But most importantly, our production ran into a temporary shortage of the 3840 x 3840 QLED panels required for the Crystal Super 50 PPD, 57 PPD QLED, and Ultrawide
The Crystal Super combines hundreds of parts, from different suppliers and manufacturers who collaborate with Pimax. Any shortage in parts brings delays to the entire production. For the panels used in the Super, we adhere to the highest standards. The QLED panels used are 1500 pixels per inch, the highest of any LCD panel on the market, and we specifically designed our glass aspheric lenses to show all the details on the panel, which is why any imperfection on the panel will show for the user. Because of this, we strictly adhere to grade 1 panel quality (more about this here).

Yet our QLED panel supplier has mentioned low production yields due to manufacturing complexity. This caused a panel shortage that slightly delayed our production. So for a period of time, we produced Crystal Super's at a lower pace than we expected.

That said: We are still confident of shipping most 50 PPD QLED pre-orders from before May 2025, in the month of June, or early July.

For this we're doing everything to speed up production. Pimax owns three factories, one for optical stacks, one for the Crystal Light, and one for the Crystal Super. We are now also temporarily halting production on the Crystal Light to assist with the production of the Crystal Super. This means we're quickly catching up on the delay of the Crystal Super production. We're also continueing work on the weekends to ensure a higher production speed, while still keeping quality checks in place.

Invitation to switch to the Crystal Super Ultrawide

Secondly, we wish to highlight that at the end of May, we announced the Crystal Super Ultrawide, a variant of the 50 PPD QLED Optical engine. It features the same 3840 x 3840 QLED panels and 50 PPD lenses as the 50 PPD Crystal Super, but slightly tweaks their position, and lowers the stereo overlap to achieve a larger horizontal field of view. You can see this explaination in more detail in our video:

Since we announced this, we heard of many 50 PPD users who would like to switch. We also think that nearly all users will be happy with the wider field of view, with still a great stereo overlap — as all first impressions from users have all been very positive.

Hence, since your order has not shipped yet, we want to offer you the option to swap your pre-order from the 50 PPD to the Ultrawide. Your price will not change, and your order will not be put back into the queue. However, since the Ultrawide mass production is about to start, your headset in this case will be shipped slightly later. The Ultrawide version will be shipped in the order of when the original purchase was made, starting from July 2025.

To change your order to the Crystal Super Ultrawide:

  • Crystal Super orders that haven't shipped yet can change their order to the Ultrawide for free. You can do this by contacting our customer support here, or use the chat function in Pimax Play or on pimax.com during our operating hours.
  • Once your order has started shipping, the option to change your optical engine is no longer available. (In this case, you can still choose to separately buy the Ultrawide optical engine and swap it with the 50 PPD as you please. The price for the Ultrawide optical engine is $399 USD.)
