Pimax ConcaveView

Pimax ConcaveView

Pancake lenses have been around for nearly a decade, but early designs came with trade-offs. They offered slimmer form factors compared to bulky fresnel or aspheric lenses, but fell short in clarity and field of view. For years, we at Pimax explored prototypes, only to find that they didn’t meet our demanding standards.

That has changed. Recent advancements in reflectors, polarizers, and lens coatings have given pancake optics new life. At Pimax, we’ve spent over five years refining the design, pushing for higher clarity, wider fields of view, and more natural visual experiences.

Why ConcaveView Is Different

The innovation behind ConcaveView lies in its unique lens geometry. Unlike traditional pancake lenses, one of our elements is concave, bending inward much like a door peephole. This seemingly simple design choice unlocks something extraordinary:
  • A wider field of view: ConcaveView lenses achieve a FOV that was previously impossible with pancake designs. On the Dream Air SE, this translates into a 105° horizontal FOV, while our flagship Dream Air pushes it further to 110°, the widest of any micro-OLED VR headset on the market.
  • Closer eye placement: With ConcaveView, you can comfortably position your eyes closer to the lens without eyelash interference, enhancing immersion and maximizing the visual experience.
  • Balanced overlap for comfort: Instead of inflating numbers with exaggerated combined FOVs, we’ve prioritized stereo overlap, a crucial factor for visual clarity and comfort during extended play.

Sharper, Clearer, More Immersive

ConcaveView lenses don’t just widen the view; they also improve clarity. By combining advanced glass-plastic hybrid elements and specialized thin-film coatings, we’ve reduced glare and optimized aberration correction. The result is sharper images, richer colors, and visuals that feel more lifelike.

Built for the Future of VR

ConcaveView is more than a lens; it’s a platform. It powers our Dream Air series, the most compact full-feature VR headsets ever built, and integrates seamlessly into the modular Crystal Super with its micro-OLED optical engine, expanding FOV up to 116° horizontal.

This technology is the foundation of our next chapter — proof that Pimax continues to lead the way in visual innovation, breaking barriers where others settle for compromise.
