Introducing Pimax Play EVO

Pimax Play has grown into one of the most capable PC VR clients available, but supporting a broad user base leaves less room for experimental, edge-case, or time-limited features. Pimax previously addressed this with a Labs tag. Pimax Play EVO takes that further.

EVO is a separate client, developed by a dedicated team, running alongside mainline Pimax Play. Features that prove successful in EVO are integrated into Pimax Play.

Watch the announcement:

Five Experiments. All Live.

The first release ships with five features.
  • 6DOF Recline Mode — Play VR lying down. The horizon stays level regardless of body angle, suited to movies, social VR, or any application from a reclined position.
  • Room-Tracking Offset — Adjust the in-game viewpoint independently of physical position, such as moving the view outside a race car to see the full vehicle.
  • Video Recording — Record exactly what's displayed in the headset, including menus, overlays, and rendering effects. With Quadview enabled, recordings reflect the sharp center and blurred periphery seen during use.
  • Hand Tracking — Gesture-based input on Crystal Light, Crystal Super, Dream Air, and Dream Air SE, using onboard tracking cameras. Useful for select games and general navigation, such as browsing YouTube.
  • Open Port — Pimax is opening part of the Pimax Play display pipeline to verified third-party plugins. First up: a native SteamVR driver built with Sboys3, rolling out across Crystal Light, Crystal Super, Dream Air, and Dream Air SE. Learn how to set it up HERE.

Headset Support

EVO supports Crystal Light, Crystal Super, Dream Air, and Dream Air SE. A couple of features are rolling out headset by headset:
  • Hand Tracking is currently available on Dream Air and Dream Air SE. Crystal Light and Crystal Super support is coming in a later update.
  • The Sboys3 SteamVR native driver currently supports Dream Air (Lighthouse version) only. Support for Dream Air SE, Crystal Light, and Crystal Super is in development.
