Recent Breakthroughs for the PCVR Industry

If you’ve been waiting for the "next level" of stability and content for your VR headset, the recent wave of updates and community breakthroughs has officially landed.

Here are the three critical updates you need to know about:

  1. Star Citizen: The VR Momentum (Alpha 4.6 LIVE & 4.7 Updates)

The transition from experimental to native VR in Star Citizen is accelerating.

  • Alpha 4.6 LIVE (The Foundation): The current live environment now includes an official VR toggle in the settings menu, moving away from the "hacky" console command era. Key technical fixes in this build include the HDR OpenXR-Vulkan crash fix and the Nvidia Smooth Motion black screen fix. For Pimax users, 4.6 also introduced experimental eye-tracking support for the stereo cursor.

  • Alpha 4.7 (The Next Leap): Currently in testing, 4.7 focuses on refined OpenXR stability. It addresses frame-pacing issues and introduces the Rockcracker event, new manufacturing systems, and a complete inventory UI overhaul. If you are running an Nvidia card, ensure you are on the 595.76 hotfix driver, which specifically includes Star Citizen stability fixes.

  1. Resident Evil Requiem: Praydog’s VR Mod is Here

The wait for Resident Evil 9 (Requiem) in VR is over. Legendary modder Praydog has released a functional VR mod that works seamlessly with the Pimax VR via Pimax OpenXR.

Early testers report that the "Hotel" investigation sequence is arguably one of the most terrifying experiences available in VR today. The clarity of the Pimax displays makes the RE Engine’s lighting and atmospheric effects truly shine, surpassing even the official PSVR2 implementations of previous titles.

  1. Luke Ross's REAL VR framework made free

Luke Ross, on his Patreon page, announced that his REAL VR framework is now free. This framework works with many triple-A games, turning them into fully fledged VR games. This is an incredible opportunity for PCVR enthousiasts to enjoy games like Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part, Dark Souls, and Baldur's Gate 3 in virtual reality.

  1. MSFS 2024: Sim Update 4 & Sim Update 5 Beta

Microsoft and Asobo are doubling down on VR optimization. While many are looking toward the Sim Update 5 public beta, the recent Sim Update 4 (Beta 1.6.3.0) has already proven to be a "huge update for VR" according to Pimax’s latest technical deep dive.
The update delivers massive improvements to VR stability and fluidity, resolving the persistent CPU bottlenecks and stuttering issues that previously impacted high-resolution headsets. For Pimax users, this means clearer cockpits and smoother low-altitude flight without the stuttering that plagued earlier builds.
