Most guides ask you to start with your GPU and work backward. Flip it. Pick the headset that matches what you actually want to see and do in VR, then check where your GPU lands on that headset's requirements. Pimax rates Crystal Light, Crystal Super, and Dream Air against the same three tiers, Minimum, Recommended, and Best Experience, so the check is quick no matter which model you're eyeing.
FFR vs. DFR in one line: Crystal Light uses Fixed Foveated Rendering, no eye tracking, fixed sharp zone. Crystal Super (all engines) and Dream Air use Dynamic Foveated Rendering, real eye tracking, sharp zone follows your gaze. What the three tiers mean: Minimum gets you playing. Recommended gets you comfortable. Best Experience gets you full native resolution at full settings. None of them are a cutoff, they're a spectrum.
Crystal Light — the wide-compatibility pick
Best for: players who want a strong daily-driver headset without upgrading their GPU first.
| Spec | Value |
| Resolution | 2,880 x 2,880 per eye |
| PPD | 35 |
| FOV | 110° |
| Refresh rate | 72 / 90 / 120Hz |
| Eye tracking | Not supported (Fixed FFR 2.0) |
| Price | From $899 |
GPU tiers:
| Tier | GPU |
| Minimum | RTX 2070/2070S/2080/2080S/2080Ti, RTX 3060/3060Ti/3070/3070Ti, RTX 4060/4060Ti, RX 5700XT/6700XT |
| Recommended | RTX 3080/3080Ti/3090, RTX 4070/4070S, RX 6800/6800XT/6900XT/6950XT |
| Best Experience | RTX 4070Ti/4070Ti Super/4080/4080 Super/4090, RTX 5090, RX 7900XT/7900XTX |
Real numbers (RTX 3070 / 3080 class, from Pimax's user survey data):
| Game | Render scale | Typical FPS |
| MSFS | 50–75% | 30–70 |
| DCS World | 50–100% | 40–80 |
| iRacing | 25–75% | 70–90+ |
| Assetto Corsa | 50–100% | 40–90 |
| Half-Life Alyx | 50–100% | 80–90+ |
Pimax's own conclusion from that dataset: RTX 3070/3080 class cards handle Crystal Light comfortably across sims and native VR titles once FFR and render scale are tuned, with users generally prioritizing stable frame pacing over chasing maximum FPS. If you need more info, read another specific GPU guide for Crystal Light here.
Bottom line: if your GPU is Minimum tier or better, Crystal Light is the model where that card gets you closest to native resolution.
Crystal Super — flagship clarity, three optical engines
Best for: players who want a wider FOV or higher pixel density and don't mind picking an engine to match.
| Engine | Resolution/eye | PPD | FOV |
| 50 PPD | 3,840 x 3,840 | 50 | 127° |
| 57 PPD | 3,840 x 3,840 | 57 | 106° |
| Ultrawide | 3,840 x 3,840 | 50 | 140° |
Refresh rate: 72/90Hz. Eye tracking: supported (DFR 2.0). Price: from $1,799 (currently $1,599).
GPU tiers (same bracket across all three engines):
| Tier | GPU |
| Minimum | RTX 2070/2070S/2080/2080S/2080Ti, RTX 3060/3060Ti/3070/3070Ti, RTX 4060/4060Ti, RX 5700XT/6700XT |
| Recommended | RTX 3080/3080Ti/3090, RTX 4070/4070S, RX 6800/6800XT/6900XT/6950XT |
| Best Experience | RTX 4070Ti/4070Ti Super/4080/4080 Super/4090, RTX 5090, RX 7900XT/7900XTX |
Real numbers: three Crystal Super owners on an RTX 3090 (Recommended tier) averaged 40+ FPS at roughly 75% resolution scale in DCS World. On an RTX 4090, the 57 PPD engine ran about 3.24% faster than the 50 PPD engine, a difference driven by PPD and FOV, not GPU. If you need more info, read another specific GPU guide for Crystal Super here.
Bottom line: pick the engine by FOV preference first (127° / 106° / 140°), the GPU requirement doesn't change between them.
Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED — true blacks, same platform
Best for: players who want per-pixel contrast and HDR-like blacks and are willing to pair it with a stronger GPU for full fidelity.
| Spec | Value |
| Resolution | 3,840 x 3,552 per eye |
| PPD | 53 |
| FOV | 116° |
| Refresh rate | 72 / 90Hz |
| Eye tracking | Supported (DFR 2.0) |
| Price | From $2,199 (bundle $2,499, engine-only upgrade $1,199) |
GPU tiers:
| Tier | GPU |
| Minimum | RTX 2070/2070S/2080/2080S/2080Ti, RTX 3060/3060Ti/3070/3070Ti, RTX 4060/4060Ti, RX 5700XT/6700XT |
| Recommended | RTX 3080/3080Ti/3090, RTX 4070/4070S, RX 6800/6800XT/6900XT/6950XT |
| Best Experience | RTX 4070Ti/4070Ti Super/4080/4080 Super/4090, RTX 5090, RX 7900XT/7900XTX |
Bottom line: the Micro-OLED panel runs hotter and rewards a Best Experience-tier card most, but Minimum tier still gets you playing.
Dream Air — 170g, flagship resolution
Best for: players who want the lightest headset on the market and don't want to compromise on resolution to get it.
| Spec | Value |
| Resolution | 3,840 x 3,552 per eye |
| FOV | 110° |
| Refresh rate | 90Hz |
| Weight | Under 170g |
| Eye tracking | Supported (DFR ready) |
| Price | $1,999 (Lighthouse) / $2,299 (SLAM + controllers) |
GPU tiers (same bracket as Crystal Light and Crystal Super):
| Tier | GPU |
| Minimum | RTX 2070/2070S/2080/2080S/2080Ti, RTX 3060/3060Ti/3070/3070Ti, RTX 4060/4060Ti, RX 5700XT/6700XT |
| Recommended | RTX 3080/3080Ti/3090, RTX 4070/4070S, RX 6800/6800XT/6900XT/6950XT |
| Best Experience | RTX 4070Ti/4070Ti Super/4080/4080 Super/4090, RTX 5090, RX 7900XT/7900XTX |
Bottom line: the low weight doesn't lower the GPU bar, the panel resolution matches Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED, so treat the GPU tiers the same way.
Not enough GPU vs. wrong settings
An RTX 3070 doesn't rule out Crystal Super, it puts you at Minimum tier, running sims at a reduced but genuinely enjoyable resolution scale. An RTX 2070 doesn't rule out Dream Air either, it just means Recommended or Best Experience tier is where that panel's full native clarity opens up. Every model on this page runs on every tier, the tier changes what you see, not whether you can play.
Outside the Pimax numbers
-
Steam Hardware Survey (Valve, mid-2026): RTX 3060 and RTX 4060 are consistently the most common GPUs on the platform, each around 3.7–4% of systems, both Minimum tier. Combined RTX 40/50-series ownership sits under 30%, and RTX 5090 alone is under 0.5%. Most PCs are already inside Minimum-to-Recommended range.
-
UploadVR, on Sony's PSVR2 data: eye-tracked foveated rendering saves roughly 72% of GPU load versus none, versus about 60% for fixed foveation, an independent confirmation of the FFR/DFR gap described above.
-
Bigscreen (Beyond 2e, competitor headset): describes DFR's real-world benefit as equivalent to a full GPU-generation upgrade, closing the RTX 4090-to-5090 gap in DCS World and iRacing, the same jump reflected in Pimax's own Best Experience bracket.
Full CPU/RAM reference (applies to all four models above)
| Tier | CPU floor | RAM | Storage |
| Minimum | i5 12th gen or newer, or equivalent | 16GB | 5GB |
| Recommended | i7 13th gen or newer, or equivalent | 16GB | 5GB |
| Best Experience | i7 14th gen or newer, or equivalent | 32GB | 10GB |
Quick self-check
| I want to play... | I need at least... | For the full experience... |
