The Pimax Crystal is the fourth VR headset that I have owned and the second from Pimax. In my experience, the Crystal comes in second to none in providing the ultimate experience in VR simulation applications within its price point. I am able to import customized checklists and flight manuals into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and use them to perform procedures during simulated normal, non-normal, and emergency situations on the modeled equipment that I fly in the real world (A320). The Crystal allows optimum visual acuity in which reading small text is easier with zero eye strain whether it is from reading those imported documents to the limitations’ placards placed all around the cockpit. Overall, the Pimax Crystal is a great asset to VR flight simulators whether it be for strictly gaming or staying sharp on company policies and procedures during long stretches of days off from work.

Eye tracking beta firmware: Awesomeness in DCS

I was lucky enough to be asked to join the testing team for the pre-release version of the upcoming firmware beta that adds eye tracking functionality, along with auto-IPD, wearing location reminder, and lighthouse tracking mode, along with firmware updates for the controllers that dramatically improve tracking performance.

Crystal Complete Kit Software Testing

Overall, the eye tracking was the biggest difference and it seems to have been implemented very well (much better than the Aero). It's UI isn't annoying and it doesn't pimp me for a recal every time I peek out. I'm glad these features are rolling out and I'm looking forward to using this beast every day. If anybody wants elaboration on the features or my experience, ask away!

Quick review of the beta full functionality software and firmware

I setup the room and iniatated the eye tracking calibration after enabling the function in the software. Make sure you have a controller switched on and in hand to confirm. Eye tracking calibration is easy and straightforward. Takes about 1 minute. IPD calibration was also very easy and automatic.

Pimax Crystal: Great Headset with a Few Growing Pains

I have tested AMS2, half life 2 VR Mod Episode One, half life Alyx, AirCar, Star Wars Squadron and Elite Dangerous so far. I'm very impressed with image quality. I tried Maximum and Balanced resolutions but I always come back to Balanced to allow steady 90fps (RTX 4090) with excellent visual clarity.

My Pimax Crystal story

I installed the firmware update yesterday that included eye tracking and was instantly impressed. I installed Matthieu Bucchianeri’s Quad view & OpenXR Eye Trackers and tested Pavlov (this type of DFR only works on DCS & Pavlov). And the gains were insane!!

Crystal Lighthouse faceplate review

Whether you want or need the Lighthouse faceplate is going to be down to what your VR use-case is. If you require millimeter precision with your tracking, then this is for you. If you spend most of your time in VRChat, or H/L Alex, then the inside-out tracking will probably work just fine. Note, however, that if you switch over to lighthouse mode, that you'll need to also use other hand-controllers/wands that are lighthouse compliant, as the default Pimax controllers that come with the Crystal are really only intended for Inside-Out tracking when in AIO mode.
